A 14-year-old youth was found dead just days following being falsely accused of taking the ashes of a dead baby during a burglary, a coroner's inquiry has learned.

Heartbreaking Finding

The young boy's mother and father discovered his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.

Untrue Accusations Start

The inquest heard how his mother got a communication on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a woman asking if Kai was her child. The communication added: "Inform him appreciation for breaking into my apartment."

In a testimony read to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the news, claiming her infant's remains had been taken in a break-in - a allegation which was untrue.

Police Investigation

An investigation report from authorities later determined the supposed burglary victim had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that the items was not taken in the first place".

News coverage about the supposed stolen remains attracted online comments, and although the teenager was not named in the posts, his parent said people "understood it was him".

The "social media content were extremely upsetting", she said.

Emotional Wellbeing Impact

She added that her son had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' opinions genuinely were important to him.

"This must have hurt him deeply," she said, "particularly when this was untrue".

Kai was arrested at home, but no evidence was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed pending further inquiry.

Police said they would be in touch, the inquest learned, but had not contacted the relatives by the moment of his passing.

Isolation and Anxiety

His parent said Kai "became isolated" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could feel like much longer".

When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her child informed her he had gone into the house because the resident who resided there had said he could use the bathroom whenever he wanted, but denied taking anything.

Digital Harassment

In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being harassed online after the allegations.

The inquest heard that a young adult encouraged the teenager to end his life.

She had no concerns on the evening before he passed away, describing how she had listened to him "chuckling and joking".

She described him as a "compassionate, affectionate" boy, and said her "family is completely devastated".

He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".

School Response

The inquest heard from educational staff at Connah's Quay High School.

On November 8th, she "heard some students talking that the student had been detained and that was the first I learned".

"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.

After the conversation, the staff member said she rang Kai's family telephone and left a message saying she had communicated to Kai about the accusations.

The proceedings heard his parents said they did not receive that message.

Formal Finding

Senior investigator informed the inquest he would await documents regarding what enhancements had been made to handling suspects with the condition, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.

Delivering a narrative finding, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old individual.

"Probably falsehoods were subsequently embellished and amplified through the medium of social media.

"During 11 November, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his interview he was freed whilst investigations proceeded."

The official concluded: "There is no evidence that the acts or failures of any agency led to or added to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted action it is impossible to determine his purpose."
