Enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the release of Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined can get a head start too much longer. An free-to-play playable preview will go live on January 7th, offering a substantial taste into the game's initial chapters. Importantly, any save data earned within this demo is eligible to be imported directly into the full game upon its February debut.

Beyond Just a Simple Re-release: A Complete Transformation

This title represents a from-scratch re-envisioning of the iconic year 2000 role-playing game, originally known as Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. Taking a significant departure from other series remakes, such as the previously released HD-2D iterations, this remake adopts a charming three-dimensional visual presentation. The world have been crafted to evoke intricate dioramas, with party members sporting a whimsical chibi-esque look.

"Taking into account the previous port, the main quest was remained notoriously extended. Consequently, the team came to a determination that we wanted to tighten the story, [and] make this experience for modern players."

Key Mechanical Changes and Updates

Square Enix have implemented a host of modernizations to refresh the original gameplay loop. This encompasses:

• Quick Field Encounters: Similar to modern role-playing games, weaker enemies are now defeated instantly on the exploration screen eliminating the need for entering a full traditional combat screen.
• Variable Battle Speed: Gamers can speed up combat animations to rapidly power through simpler encounters.
• Expanded Vocation System: A completely new character role has been added for this remake. Furthermore, characters gain the option to take on a second vocation, significantly enhancing customization possibilities.

These refinements are aimed at address one of the original title's common criticisms: its daunting length. The original adventure could easily take over 100 hours to see through. This new version has been specifically designed to improve progression and cut down on any bloat.

Save the Date: Demo and Full Launch Information

Interested JRPG fans will be able to start exploring the reimagined world of DQ7 firsthand when the complimentary trial goes live on Wednesday, January 7th. Subsequently, the complete game, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, will then be set to arrive on 5th February 2026. It will be available on a wide selection of systems, such as Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X.
