The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
