What's Inside that Case Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped in a realm of memories constructed from the memories of Henry Creel. Their quest for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—a discovery that potentially carries the secret to his downfall permanently.

A Journey Into the Tunnel
When she finds Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a telescope found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry find an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the event wasn't just a simple act of survival.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission
The play reveals the 1943 event, which transported a warship into a dimension later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.
The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in remote Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to hand over to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. The man in the mine shaft was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Given what is understood of Brenner's work, the briefcase most likely held samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, leading to the awakening of his powers—traits he would genetically impart to the children under Brenner's care.
A second theory, the case could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he battles the whispers of a dark entity, much like how Will was controlled by the entity in season 2.
Confronting Terror
His lasting fear of that cave highlights how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to fortify himself.
His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the endgame conflict ahead.
