The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly after his electoral win in November.

"My choice rested on our family's safety and the imperative to directing all of my focus on carrying out the affordability agenda voters supported," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community known for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he added.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the apartment even though he came from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a place for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience surroundings far removed from his modest Astoria home.

With its pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated to reflect the home's original era.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the housing expenses outpaces the average income.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
